Lately I’ve been reaching out to my friends and my twitter followers asking them for recommendations on great TV shows to watch as I have run out of new episodes for the two shows I’ve been watching the most of lately.
I always have had great luck when getting recommendations from friends and twitter followers especially when so many of them recommend the same show.
This was the exact process how I really got into, and really enjoyed, Mad Men and Breaking Bad which are the two shows that I am now fresh out of episodes.
I have been fielding recommendations, and although it’s too early to tell which show I’m going to start watching I wanted to share with you a show that I have thoroughly enjoyed and whole heartily recommend anytime any asks me for a recommendation.
Reason #1: The Characters
The characters in this show are amazing and they are one thing that sets this show apart from most other shows. I cannot think of another show that has had 11 “main” characters like there are on Modern Family.
Seinfeld had 4 main characters: Jerry, Kramer, Elane and George.
Friends had 6 main characters: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross.
So, when you look at the fact that Modern Family has 11 characters (12 if you count Jay and Gloria’s new baby) who play major roles in this show I find it to be amazing. I cannot imagine trying to work all the characters into each short 30 minute show but the writers have done an excellent job with this as well.
My favorite character is Phil Dunphy since he does a great job at playing the semi-oblivious “cool dad” who doesn’t always know when he is part of the job or he IS the joke. Some of Phil’s philosophies, comments and actions are really funny and he gets me laughing. Check out some of his best moments from the show:
Reason #2: It’s Hilarious
As TV has shifted from situational comedies (sitcoms) and other scripted programming to the overwhelming amount of reality shows (some good, some bad and some downright wrong) over the past decade it’s nice to see a well thought out sitcom that actually makes people laugh.
I haven’t conducted a truly scientific study but when I think back to when I have been watching Modern Family episodes on Hulu my laughs per episode ratio has been pretty high.
What I also like about the show is that it can be funny even if you don’t know the full story lines. Now don’t get me wrong… I can really appreciate a well thought out and cleaver comedy, like Arrested Development, but I honestly think that shows like Arrested Development are too smart for their own good.
If you watched Arrested Development from the start the show was many times funnier than if you watched a random episode here and there.
With that being said, Modern Family does get funnier if you follow it from the start as there are jokes that play out over time but I find that I can watch an episode, any episode, and still get my laugh on.
Reason #3: You Can Watch Modern Family on Hulu in Canada
I don’t know about you, but I love the “binge watch”. I don’t have a ton of time during the week to sit down and watch my favorite shows when they air for the first time.
Since I know how to get Hulu in Canada (here is the guide) with HMA I don’t worry about missing a bunch of episodes as I know that when I have a few hours where I want to enjoy relaxing on the couch I can fire up HMA (so I’m virtually residing in the USA) and can get caught up on the Modern Family episode that I’ve missed.
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a new show that will make you laugh out loud I urge you to check out Modern Family. Bonus points to you if you sign up for HMA so you can watch Modern Family on Hulu here in Canada.
