As I sit down to write this at 3 PM on Friday May 17th, it’s officially May Long Weekend (it starts at noon, right?).

Although the weather doesn’t typically cooperate with us over May Long Weekend it’s officially now patio, camping, and backyard BBQing season here in Canada.

Remember, it won’t last long so be sure to take advantage of it while you can.

The inspiration for this post is Mother’s Day, May Long Weekend and summer in general.

We hosted 11 people over here for Mother’s Day brunch and it was a lot of work.  Groceries, setting up a second table, cleaning, cooking, entertaining and so much more that goes into hosting a fun party.

The one thing that I love knowing I won’t have to worry about is: The Music

You see, I have this personal DJ that follows me around wherever I go and plays nothing but the hits based on my mood or setting that day.

Family dinner means smooth jazz or country.  Beers with buddies on the deck equals classic rock or country.  Reading a book means classical or country.  Stuck in rush hour means rap or country.  Country goes with every occasion, doesn’t it? (Make sure to leave a comment if you agree or don’t agree.)

You might be wondering how much this personal DJ of mine costs to be on call and ready to drop some tunes whenever and wherever I want him to be.

It costs me a big fat zero.

That’s right, nothing, nada, zilch, zero.

Of course, I’m talking about Pandora Internet Radio, and before you tell me it’s not available up here in Canada, I promise that you can get it up here.

If you know how to virtually reside in the USA , then you ARE able to listen to Pandora in Canada, even on the go over your cellular network.

But, you will need a brilliant little piece of software, that I refer to as HMA, that does cost as little as $6.55 per month.  Trust me, it’s worth tens times that for all the free content you can access from Pandora and Hulu alone.

If you have a Canaidan Netflix account you can use it to access the American Netflix library in Canada too (which will likely blow you mind with how much better it is).

I just want to let you know how great having HMA and Pandora can be when you’re hosting a backyard barbeque, enjoying time at the lake with friends or even just enjoying an icy cold beverage with someone special in the evenings.

What makes Pandora so great is you don’t have to worry about making a playlist or worry about picking the next song all the time.

Pandora’s music genome project is the backbone of the service.  Their efforts to “capture the essence at the fundamental level” has clearly worked, as it’s amazing how Pandora knows my musical tastes almost better than I do.

I will also admit that I’m a lazy Pandora user.  I spend about 5-20 minutes the first time I set up a new radio station giving songs thumbs up or thumbs down and then I just let things ride.  I find that 5-20 minutes of guidance is all Pandora needs to essentially know exactly what you want to listen to.

What I like to do is turn on HMA on my iPhone, pick one of my Pandora radio stations, set my phone in my Bose Portable SoundDock and then:

With one simple trick you easily set up your computer, iPhone, android device, iPad, PS3, etc. to virtually reside in the USA.

By doing this you will instantly have access to the US Netflix library which is widely believed to be somewhere between three and ten times bigger than what is available up here in Canada.

So, if you deploy this trick you’re not only going to be trying to figure out which Netflix Canada new releases you’re going to watch you’re going to be able to surf through the American Netflix new releases since you will know how to get American Netflix in Canada.

First Things First – Set Up Your Portal

The first thing you will need to virtually reside in the United States of America is a great piece of software called HMA.

The secret sauce behind this piece of software is that it creates a connection between your computer up here in Canada and one of HMA’s servers in America.

By establishing this connection before you log into your Canadian Netflix account it will appear that your computer is located in America and Netflix will grant you access to American Netflix in Canada!

How To Virtually Reside in the USA

In order to virtually reside in the USA you will need to download HMA from the navigation on the left side of the page in your HMA account.

After you download HMA onto your computer all you need to do is change the setting on the dashboard so you connected to a US server that is close to where you live then click the green button to connected to the VPN.

Let the magic happen behind the scenes and in a few quick seconds you’ll be connected to one of HMA’s US servers.

Check Out The “Netflix Canada New Releases”

I had to use the Austin Powers quotation marks there because these “new releases” are only new to you now because this is likely the first time you have had access the US Netflix library in Canada.

It would be next to impossible to list every single TV show and move that you will now be able to watch in Canada thanks to HMA but a few notable shows are The Walking Dead, Limitless, 30 Rock, Good Will Hunting, Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood, Parks and Rec, South Park, Teen Mom, The Office, West Wing, The Wonder Years, Spinal Tap and Wilfred just to name a few.

Since you likely found this because you were searching for a list of what’s new on Netflix Canada I suggest you’ll give this trick because once you have access to the American version of Netflix you won’t be nearly as likely to be searching for a TV show of movie to watch anytime soon.

I was just working on seeing if I could find if you could stream episode of the TV show Dallas from Canada for Lynn and it hit me… I should answer here question on the blog for everyone to see.

So this post will be the first of many where I answer your questions here on the site!

Hi Brent, I want to view all episodes of season 2 of Dallas (the TV show 2012-2013 Season.  Is it available on Hulu Plus or Hulu? If not, do you know how I can get it?  Many thanks for your help. Lynn

After getting Lynn’s email I went searching for where she would be able to watch Dallas from Canada.

A quick search at Hulu proved to be unfruitful.

Then I logged into my Canadian Netflix account to check that and saw the following image:

Then I logged into  one of the USA based HMA servers to see if Dallas was available on American Netflix in Canada and… drum roll please…

BAM!  It was there!

Okay, so partial victory here since Lynn was looking for season 2 and American Netflix only has season 1 on right now but being able to stream one season on demand from Canada is better than none!

Plus, Netflix is adding new seasons and shows all the time so it’s probably just a matter of time before Lynn and everyone else in Canada who follows this guide will be able to watch season 2 of Dallas from Canada.

If you want to watch the Masters live outside of the USA you have come to the right spot.

Trying to get a ticket to the Masters is next to impossible (it’s widely considered to be the toughest ticket in all of sports) and if you’re going to buy tickets on the secondary market you better make sure you have some deep pockets.

Take a look at this pair of tickets (2 tickets, not 20) that are being offered for $18,999.  Craziness.

Since it’s the toughest ticket in spots, I’m going to assume that (like me) you’re stuck watching The Masters on TV.  Or better yet, you’re streaming The Masters live online with picture-in-picture and the ability to choose which featured group or holes to watch.  In full screen if you’re not worried about a boss catching you!

The problem is that if you go to The Masters homepage from Canada or anywhere outside of the USA you will see this:

Now that doesn’t look all that bad, especially compared to nasty site you’ll see when you try to watch Hulu in Canada. 

What you don’t know, can’t hurt you right? 

Well, I’m about to shed the light on the fact that there is one big difference between The Master’s website when visited from Canada vs. when visited from the USA. 

Check out this image which I captured after I deployed the sneaky trick that will allow you to watch The Masters live outside of the USA.

Do you now see that there is a red button that says “Live”?  Can you guess what will happen when you click it?

That’s right, if you use the special trick that allows your computer to virtually reside in the USA you be able to stream live Masters coverage from outside the United States.

Put The Right Tool In Your Bag

The only  thing you will need to add to your bag to make this work is a piece of software called HMA.  This software is a Pro VPN which allows you to divert your internet connection through one of their hundreds of servers across the United States.

By doing this your computer will appear that it’s sitting in the good old U.S. of A which means that you will be able to stream live gold as well as access other great sites that are usually only available from within the US boarder.  I’m talking about being able to do things like watch Netflix USA in Canada and watch All My Children on Hulu from Canada.

HMA is one bad mombo jombo… or something like that.

Tee Things Up

You will need to download HMA which can be done by by clicking on the download software link:

Once you have downloaded HMA you will then use it to connect to a US server which allows you to virtually reside in the USA:

After this step is done you will want to go back to your browser and clear your cache, history, cookies, whatever their called, etc.  Then, just head back over to The Masters website and you should see that highly coveted red button that says “Live”.

Go ahead and click on that and the following screen show show up:

Here is where things can get fun!  You can choose to watch either of the featured groups, holes 15 & 16, amen corner as well the driving range and an in-depth piece on the Masters.  Also make note of the “Picture-in-picture” option in the top right of the screen.  If you click that a second screen will pop up and you can put it anywhere on the bigger screen, like so:

If the smaller picture is taking up to much of the screen you can expand the screens out to be full screen for maximum viewing pleasure:

So there you have it, you are now an Internet-Whiz-Kid because you now know that you can use HMA Pro VPN to have your computer virtually reside in the USA.

It’s amazing how little things can cue up a chain of events that takes you somewhere.

If you have seen The Butterfly Effect, you know what I’m talking about.

This past weekend I had a very small (I mean, micro) butterfly effect that lead me to writing this post.

You see, I was hanging out with a friend and he paid with the RFID chip in his credit card and gave me a look that said “how cool was that?!?”

I just nodded my head until we walked out of the 7-11 with my San pellegrino water in tote (I gave up drinking pop and haven’t had a single sip of a pop in almost two years!) to tell him that he should call and have his credit card company send him a new card without the RFID chip activated.

Of course I was met with a blank stare and the question of “why the heck would I want to do that?!?” I told him the little that I know about RFID chips… and that it’s apparently very easy for people to steal your credit card data when your card’s RFID chip is active.

Now, the would be credit card info thief would need to get very close to you (close enough for your spidy senses to get set off) with a certain device in order to steal your info but still, it’s possible.

Heck, a wallet to protect against this exact threat pre-sold nearly $300,000 worth of wallets on Kickstarter not too long ago.

He wasn’t buying it. I then remembered that he really liked the show Mythbusters. Next, I remember a short video I saw on YouTube about how the Mythbusters were going to do a show on RFIDs and how the info could be hacked, etc. only to get a call from the chief council from Amex, Visa, Discover, etc. telling them they they were not doing the show. Here is the short clip where Adam Savage talks about this experience:

So, the micro butterfly effect goes like this: I go to 7-11, watching my friend pay with a credit card RFID chip, remembering he liked Mythbusters and a random clip I saw on YouTube after watching a Kickstarter video are all the little pieces that lead me to this post to tell you how you can watch Mythbusters on Netflix in Canada.

If you are a Canadian Netflix subscriber and you have searched for Mythbusters you were met with this nasty visual:

I wonder how a guy with the last name “Savage” feels about “My Little Pony” and “Busytown Mysteries” being the top two choices when you search for Mythbusters on Netflix in Canada.

Now, if you’ve spent anytime on this site before you are very aware by now that you can, with a simple trick, watch American Netflix in Canada.

If you’re new here, don’t worry.  First off… we’re now friends.  Secondly, here is how to watch Mythbusters on Netflix in Canada:

First Step To Watch Mythbusters On Netflix In Canada

The first thing you need to do to make this magic happen is you need to learn how to virtually reside in the USA.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to turn in your passport, do a deemed disposition of all your assets, pay an exit tax and then try to get any sort of legal status in the USA.  No, it’s much easier than that.

All you need is a great little piece of software, one I have been using longer than my soda pop sobriety (see above), which is simply amazing.

I refer to this software as HMA.  Two reasons… One, it’s quickly to type HMA than it’s 9 letter name and two, the nine letters have a 3 letter word in there that starts with ‘a’ and ends in ‘ss’.  Saying that out loud would not make my mother proud!

Next You Will Set up Shop In The USA

After you have downloaded HMA you can very quickly get set up to be able to watch Mythbusters in Canada.  With one simple setting you’ll be busting myths left, right and center (as long as the Mythbusters didn’t get call from anyone else’s legal council!)

You will want to change the setting in HMA that allows you to connect to one of their servers in the USA.  It’s best to let HMA choose based on your geographical distance or to choose one that is close to you.  It will look like this:

Once you have done this click the green “connect to vpn” button beside your password and let HMA do it’s thang.  (Did I just say “thang”??!!?!?)  I mean, “do it’s thing”.

After the connection has been established you can test about this amazing piece of software by clicking the “verify new IP address” button on the dashboard:

This is when you should be getting ready to write a “hey Brent, practice what you preach” type comment because you’ll notice that I’ve selected a server in Florida which isn’t very close to Alberta.  Take it easy on me… I was testing out connecting to different servers across the USA and that was when I snapped the screen shot.

Here is the proof that, with HMA, I’m connected to a server in the Sunshine State (Florida):

If you’ve been following along, you will now be virtually residing in the USA which means that you can go back to Netflix and refresh the page.  (Side note: Sometimes you need to clear your cookies and cache too.)  After you refresh the page and search for Mythbusters you will see this picture which will make you and (probably) Mr. Savage much happier:

If you’re not fortunate enough to be in New York City for the 2013 US Open don’t worry because I’m about to show you how to watch the 2013 US Open outside of the USA.

The US Open is the last tennis grand slam of the year and the atmosphere at the open is always electric and this year with Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic playing some incredible tennis this year should not disappoint.

If you’ve ever tried to watch the live stream of US Open from Canada (or anywhere else that is not the USA) you surely were disappointed to see that you were not able to due to your geographical location.

I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to miss out on all of the live tennis action at this year’s US Open simply because of where you live.

There is one very simple trick that you can use that will allow you to virtually reside in the United States which makes streaming the US Open live on the Internet possible for anyone outside of the US.

The Simple Trick To Watch Live US Open Tennis

The first thing that you will need is a solid Pro VPN. The technical side of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is actually quite simple yet very effective (isn’t this true of most things in life?)

When you connect to a Pro VPN your Internet connection is packed up in a secure pipeline and is then routed their a server in the United States.

By doing this, it will appear that you and your computer are sitting in the US and you will be able to watch live 2013 US Open outside of the USA.

Setting Up Your Pro VPN

Once you have signed up for your Pro VPN account you will want to download it to your computer.  After logging into your account you will see the download link, go ahead and click that.

Once you have downloaded and installed HMA Pro VPN on your computer you will want to go ahead and pick a US server from the long list of the 197 servers that HMA has in the USA.  When it comes to VPNs, trust me, bigger is better!

It’s best to pick one of the closest server locations to you based on the distance between you and the server.

For example, if you live in Toronto you will want to choose one of the HMA servers in Illinois or New Jersey rather than the servers down in Texas or California.  Don’t worry, HMA has servers spread out all over the USA so there will be one close to you.

Now the fun part!  Since you and your computer are now virtually residing in the USA (thanks to HMA) you will now be able to navigate over to the US Open website and watch all of the live US Open tennis you can handle in 2013 and beyond.

But that’s Not All

Don’t forget about all of the other site that you will also be able to access now that you know how to have your computer virtually reside in the US of A.  Amazing sites like Hulu, Pandora, Spotify, NHL, MLB and even the highly coveted US Netflix library that is rumored to be as much as 10 times bigger than the Netflix library up here in Canada.

I’ve been personally using HMA for more than 2 years now and, trust me, it’s worth ever red cent and then some.

I’m about to show you how to listen get Rhapsody Canada.

Believe me, Rhapsody will be music to your ears.

You see, probably as you already know, that Rhapsody is typically not available about of the USA.

In fact, if you head over to their website right now you will be one of the many Canadians that only get to see this ugly image:

But not me!  Nope, when I go to the Rhapsody website from Canada (after deploying the special trick I’m about to show you) I see this delightful image of the sign up page

And that means I have total access to Rhapsody’s library of 16 millions songs for either streaming or downloads (WITHOUT ADDS!).

You can too see this awesome image even if you live in Canada (or anywhere else outside the US).  The best news is that you don’t need to be a computer hack or programmer to also get full access to Rhapsody Canada.

It’s really quite simple… let’s get started.

I use a very simple software solution in order to unblock Rhapsody from outside the US.  It is called a VPN.  A VPN will allow you to mask the location of your computer.  When you have a VPN enabled and select a US based address, you magically gain access to lots of popular (but blocked) websites.  If this sounds like something you interested in (and you should be!) then continue reading our easy to follow 3 step guide.

First and Foremost

You need a high quality VPN to make this work.  I recommend you use HMA.  This VPN is the most reliable, and affordable VPN and I have been using it for several years.

So go ahead and get signed up now, so you’ll be all ready for the second step to unblocking Rhapsody from Canada.

Pro Tip 1:  HMA is a fantastic deal for all the websites it unlocks (Hulu, American Netflix, NBC.com, BBC iPlayer, etc. etc)  But if you sign up for the 12 month deal and save 43%!

After Signing Up

You’ll now have full access to HMA’s download page.  There download page is where you get their powerful Pro VPN Software.  You will just need to follow HMA’s simple download instructions in order to get the software onto your computer.

Once the software is finished downloading, you will be able to launch it.  Go ahead and do that now, and it will ask you for your personal Username and Password (you should have these through the registration process).

Pro Tip 2:  I suggest you make one quick Pro VPN dashboard change.  In the “Quick VPN Country Change” option, go ahead and set it to “Random 10 Closest Servers Based Upon Geographic Location”.  This just helps to ensure both great speeds and great reliability each time you use HMA’s Pro VPN.

Get Yourself a Prepaid Credit Card & Register It With A USA-Based Address

Now you’re going to need to a way to pay for a Rhapsody gift card online.  Since their credit card processing page only accepts USA-based credits cards you’re going to need to pick up a Vanilla MasterCard from the nearest 7-11, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc.  They sell these a ton of places and they look like this:

When you get your Vanilla MasterCard you’re going to want to register it with a US zip code.  Do do this you will need to visit www.vanillamastercard.com and click on the “US English Gift Card” option as shown below:

Once you have logged into your Vanilla MasterCard account you will then need to click on the “Register Your Card” tab on the left:

Here is where you are going to use a US zip code.  You can go to www.usps.com/zip4 to find a zip code in a specific city.  You can also go to www.realtor.com and look up an address in that same zip code.  For the Vanilla MasterCard you only need the zip code.

Later, when you’re signing up for your Rhapsody account you will need a full street address and the easiest way to get one of those is realtor.com.  Here is what the screen will look like when you’re going to register the US zip code to your prepaid credit card:

Now your card is registered to the US zip code you picked and you will now be able to purchase a Rhapsody gift card to set up your account.

Time To Sign Up For Rhapsody

Now that you’re virtually residing in the USA and you have a USA-based prepaid credit card you’re now able to head over to Rhapsody’s website and sign up for an account.

Now, don’t be too eager to click on the big orange “Try Rhapsody” button.  Instead you’re going to want to hover over the “subscriptions” link on the bottom left of the page.  Then click on “Gift” as seen in the image below.

This will take you to a page where you get to pick how many months of Rhapsody you want to prepay for.  Go ahead and choose between 1, 3, 6 or 12 months of Rhapsody.

Next you’re going to have to enter an email address and password:

Then you will be taken to a payment page where you will now enter the prepaid credit card number you have just registered to a US zip code.  You will need a full street address which you can find at www.realtor.com.  Make sure the zip code match the zip code you used to register your prepaid credit card.

Go ahead and enter your information and click continue.

Do not be alarmed if it rejects your payment 3, 4, 5 or more times. Just keep trying to process the payment and, in my experience, it will eventually process. This can be frustrating but remember you’re about to access 16 million pus songs without any ads!

After the payment has processed you will be taken to a page where you can email or print your gift card. I recommend you choose to print it but it’s totally up to you.

Your gift card code will open up and you’ll want to copy it so you can paste it when you go to redeem it.  Here is what this page will look like:

Now that you have a gift card code you’re going to want to redeem it so you can start to listen to to Rhapsody in Canada!  Navigate back to Rhapsody’s home page and then hover over the “subscriptions” tab on the bottom left of the page again.  Then you’re going to want to click the “redeem gift” option as shown below:

This will take you this page where you will enter an email address, password and your gift card code:

The  next thing you’ll see is going to be something not too many Canadians see (unless you this with them) and, trust me, it’s a glorious site to see!  It’s the account confirmation page:

Now the best step of all…Rhapsody Canada Time!

Now that you’re virtually residing in the USA (thanks to HMA) you can go to member homepage and start listening to more than 16 millions songs.

With over 16 millions songs (with no adds) you’ll be stream or download your favorites until  your heart’s content.  Basically, if you think about it… with 16 millions songs, or roughly 93 years of continuations playing music if the average song is 3 minutes, your options are virtually endless.

For example, I was super keen to check out this band I just heard when I was having a massage this afternoon (don’t hate me).  I searched for “Middle Brother” and sure enough there they were on Rhapsody for me to listen to:

Another really cool feature that I like about Rhapsody is that you can add songs to the “mixer”.  By doing so you can set up a playlist on the fly filled with the songs you want to hear.

You can also tell Rhapsody to play the entire album and it will add the entire album to the mixer as well.

ONE LAST THING

It would be really awesome if you took just a minutes to this with all your music loving friends…because this awesome trick shouldn’t be kept to ones self!

Being able to watch Hulu Plus in Canada is well, pretty close to the best things since sliced bread.

With Hulu Plus you’re able to watch programming from more than 300 content providers on demand on your computer, mobile device and even through most popular set top boxes and Internet ready TVs.

After your tweet posts the light box will refresh and your $10 off coupon code will be revealed. I obviously cannot share this with you without getting in trouble so I covered it up… trust me, the code is under the red bar below:

Now that you have the $1o off coupon code you will want to select which Hulu Plus Start Pack you want.

So now what is a Canadian who wants to watch live March Madness games online in Canada to do?  Well… take a closer look at that image above because they tell you the answer!

They tell you that “live video is only available to viewers in the US, US territories and Bermuda.”
